HomeLearners.co.za was established in 2014 as an information portal for the parents of homeschooled learners. The original founders were parents who were or had already successfully educated their children through the homeschooling avenue after its legalisation in South Africa in 1996.
Although homeschooling was legal in South Africa at the time, many parents were still unaware about how to approach the education option for their children. There was limited information available about the legal aspects, curriculum providers and various facets of homeschooling to ensure that their child/children were afforded a quality education in the home environment. The information on this portal was intended to help bridge that gap.
Homeschooling was often plagued with a myriad of pitfalls that disadvantaged learners if not properly managed by parents and tutors, alike. However, the face of home-based education in South Africa underwent a radical transformation during and after the COVID lockdown in 202. The subsequent emergence of online schools has now improved home-based education options for South African learners.
The information on this website is contributed by parents of home-based learners. It does not purport to be an official authority or professional knowledge base. We encourage parents to comply with all the legal requirements for home-based education and seek the advice of relevant professionals and authorities in the field of education and psychology. We will not be held liable for the misuse of information on this website, and the subsequent consequences thereof.
With the evolution of homeschooling towards online platforms, the information on this website has veered more towards online schooling / learning. We encourage all parents to consider online schooling as a first option in home-based education. It is important to ensure that the online school of choice is staffed by registered educators. Parents are encouraged to discuss home-/online schooling with relevant professionals, such as a child and/or educational psychologist, before undertaking the transition from traditional to home-/online schooling.
